communicating with the client

to better understand the client’s vision, i gather information on what logos he already likes an what elements he’d like to avoid. i researched other sport content creator logos, badminton racket brands, and car brands for inspiration. he also specifically requested a logo with no face graphic or vector, minimalist letter or shape graphics, and something that is simple and recognizable.

sketching

in my initial sketches, i wanted to highlight the badminton equipment as the client is known for reviewing rackets. i also wanted to experiment with using the full channel name, “the racket scientist,” or just the initials, “rs.” the client liked 2, 6, and 8 the most, but ended up picking 2 as it had the best balance in composition.

making iterations

building off of concept 2, i sketched more iterations, experimenting with the placements and angles of the racket and letters. the client liked interations of 2.2, 2.4, and 3.2, which i vectorized for more refined feedback. we came to the conclusion that design #2 was too crowded and would look messy and with different colors. the layout of design #3 was the most balanced and the most flexible as it would be easy to expand into different dimensions. however, the design of the racket itself wasn’t clear as it could be mistaken for other items.

I made further variations on Design #3 by experimenting with how much of the racket is showing. I also used half a shuttlecock to explore diffferent compositions and levels of visual balance.

Deciding the Typeface

I went on Adobe Fonts and looked for typefaces that gave a sporty feel. I sent these options to the client and he liked Poster Gothic Cond, Refrigerator Deluxe, and Komu A the most. We also wanted to experiment using italicized text to add movement to the design, which envoked a sporty, upbeat vibe for the channel.

i used the chosen typefaces with the shuttlecock and chopped off racket design. He was drawn to the designs with italicized letters and liked Poster Gothic Cond typeface the best as it was the most visually balanced with the shuttlecock/racket.

The client wanted ilght and dark variations of the design. I started working on the color palette and experimented with the text style. He liked the dropshadow idea, but wanted to make it solid instead of an outline.

The are the final light and dark versions of The Racket Scientist’s logos, created to maintain visual consistency and
adaptability across a range of backgrounds, materials, and digital or print formats. Designing both variations ensures the
logo remains clear, impactful, and recognizable in different environments, from team uniforms and merchandise to
promotional graphics and social media.

With the design finalized, the client officially updated his YouTube channel logo. To potentially help the client grow his viewership and channel in the future, we also brainstormed possible merchandise together.
