concept gathering
i first explored how the original k-pop group's (fromis_9) graphic designers designed supersonic. they used a bubbly, energetic typeface with star elements, so i chose a similarly playful font and bold colors to capture the same fun, vibrant aesthetic. in addition to the typeface, i created a mood board filled with ideas to enhance my graphics, featuring small, cute doodles to match a bubbly aesthetic, and film camera elements to complement a grungy, retro vibe.

typography & color studies
the objective of this design project was to highlight each dancer individually, ensuring they were the clear focal point of the composition. first, i browsed adobe fonts to identify a typeface that would best emulate the visual identity of supersonic. to add energy and movement, i incorporated moving letters and star motifs inspired by the original supersonic design using adobe illustrator.

refining the look
to further emphasize the playfulness of the design, i added hand-drawn doodles, such as sparkles, smiley faces, animals, and stars throughout the design using procreate. these small, whimsical details brought a personal, handmade feel to the graphics, making them feel more engaging and less rigid. the doodles helped fill empty spaces to maintain visual balance while framing the dancer and enhancing the overall bubbly aesthetic.

For the video thumbnails, I placed the title at the top to set the tone for the performance. Then, the viewers’ eyes will naturally travel down towards the dancers. Doodles were added around the title to create energy and visual interest without distracting from the dancers. Text and outlined logos were placed at the top and bottom for balance and legibility, ensuring a clean layout across both Instagram and YouTube formats.

Shaping the Aesthetic
To emphasize the retro aesthetic, I chose a pixelated font that conveyed a sense of digital nostalgia. Initially, the layout felt flat, and I was looking for a way to add a more personalized and engaging element. Drawing inspiration from phone camera focus indicators, I created custom boxes to frame each member’s face and labeled them with their names for a personalized, dynamic touch. This not only added visual interest, but also subtly tied in the digital theme

Finishing Touches
for the YouTube End Card, I was inspired by retro film aesthetics and wanted to reflect that mood through both typography and layout. I used the same pixelated typeface for consistency. The dark background mimics the look of old film and I wanted to used the fromis_9 red “f9” stars to mimic the holes in a real roll of film. To balance the composition, I arranged the members’ names and roles around the central photo, creating a structured yet visually engaging frame.

Final Outcome
THE KOMPANY’s ‘Supersonic’ dance cover is the highest viewed dance cover of this school year, receiving over 1,300+ views in just 1 month. The cover gained attention not only for its choreography and execution, but also for its strong visual identity and promotional design, which helped draw in a wider audience.
